Your best friend just asked you to be her maid of honor. It is such a thrill and an honor, but where do you start? Often times, we see women take on this role and didn’t realize they had responsibilities and expectations beyond just the bridal shower.
For a comprehensive list of common maid of honor duties, see this article on The Knot.
First and most important, your job is to be the second in command for the wedding. Offer to help with prep, such as addressing invites and offer advice in planning. On the day of, be the point person for the wedding planner. You may not be the coordinator, but it’s a good idea to keep an up-to-date copy of the wedding timeline handy so you are prepared to answer important questions instead of the busy bride. Think of yourself as the bride’s personal assistant on her wedding day.
Another very important job is to lead the rest of the bridesmaids through what is expected of them. Whether your friend has just two bridesmaids or 10, your job is to lead them in prep and delegate their wedding day contributions.
While there are many important aspects of being a maid of honor, keep in mind the bride chose you for a reason. If you are lifting her burden and carrying her stress, then you know you are doing it right. While she needs to know she can rely on you leading up to the big day, she is probably most excited to have you in a role that is closest to her in order to share in all the wonderful memories.
