What does your headshot say about you?
In a fast moving, snap judgment, online world, your professional headshot is indispensable. Years ago, first impressions were made in-person, today they are made through digital media. Your headshot precedes you like a digital handshake to prospective clients you have yet to meet. What does your current headshot say about you? Would you buy from that person?
Bad Headshots...
Are embarrassing or require excuses
Look like cropped in snapshots
Are taken with a smartphone
Communicate a lack of investment in business
Make clients think the subject isn’t serious about his/her career
A Great Headshot...
Is something you are proud of
Portrays you as confident and approachable
Shows you in a natural, relaxed state
Reveals a little personality and style
Communicates that you believe in yourself & your business
General Guidelines
Taking a few minutes to plan from head to toe goes a long way with how you will feel about your portrait. This image is one that will likely represent you for several years so give yourself permission to buy new clothing items to help you feel and look your best.
Above all, wear clothing that fits properly, meaning items that are not baggy or even one size off.
Avoid any clothing items or accessories with bright colors, bold patterns, big grid designs, or silky, shiny sheen. They are all very distracting.
Classic colors and small patterns are always safe, flattering, and timeless. Classic colors include Blacks, Browns, Grays, & Navy Blues.
Don’t wear short sleeves or Polos unless it is your uniform
Avoid going only solid white! It can create the illusion of extra weight, blow out under the lighting, or blend in too much with a white background. If you intend to wear white, it is usually best to minimize or tone it down with layers or a jacket.
Bonus Tips to Look Even Better!
If you need a hair cut, having it done around 2 weeks before your session will allow it time to grow into the perfect look.
To look thinner and healthier, drink lots of water in the weeks ahead. Seriously, our bodies are made to retain and conserve water when we drink too little. Increasing your intake tells your body there is no longer a need for retention and it lets the water run through your body more efficiently.
Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol because it can turn your completion red.
Start managing your good rest at least three days before your session.
Men: Groom like you are preparing for a date.
Women: Feel free to get a manicure/pedicure. Even if it won't show in your final portrait, the confidence you feel will exude abundantly.
Bring a brush, comb, hair spray, or any last minute grooming items you may need with you to the headshot session.
